Speaker Bio
Prof. dr. Pieternel F. Levelt is NCAR Associate Director and Director of NSF NCAR’s Atmospheric Chemistry Observations and Modeling (ACOM) Lab. Her scientific expertise is in performing and interpreting satellite observations of the Earth’s atmospheric composition. Prof. dr. Levelt is the Principal Investigator (PI) of the OMI instrument on NASA’s EOS-Aura satellite. She is the scientific founder and former PI of the Dutch/ESA TROPOMI satellite instrument on ESA/EU sentinel-5 precursor. Prof. dr. Levelt is affiliated with KNMI, where she used to lead the R&D Satellite Observation Department, and is professor in Remote Sensing of the Earth Atmosphere at the University of Technology Delft. In 2018 she received the NASA/USGS Pecora Award and in 2021 the AMS Special Award on behalf of the International OMI Science Team. In April 2021 she was knighted in the Order of the Dutch Lion. Since May 2025 she is member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). Recently she became member of the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities (KHMW). Past advising positions include: ESF European Space Science Committee (ESSC) (2008- 2014), International Ozone Commission (IO3C) (2012-2020), the International Global Atmospheric Chemistry (IGAC) Project Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) and TNO Industry Advisory Board. Prof. dr. Levelt is a member of the Mission Advisory Groups (MAG) at ESA for the EU Copernicus sentinel 4 and sentinel 5 missions and has chaired ESA’s s5-precursor/TROPOMI MAG.
