Dr. Jaap Schellekens brings extensive expertise in hydrology, particularly in understanding the hydrological impacts of land-use and climate change, hydrological modeling with a focus on flood forecasting, and integrating remote sensing with hydrology. He has led numerous significant projects related to probabilistic flood forecasting, global hydrology, effects of climate change and has provided advisory services to leading meteorological agencies on implementing the Delft-FEWS flood forecasting system.
As the Director of Water Management at VanderSat, Jaap managed the water and climate team, successfully establishing a presence in the water market with VanderSat’s high-resolution passive microwave satellite products. In his role in the VanderSat Management Team, he emphasized the integration of R&D with infrastructure and the application of VanderSat products in the water sector.
At Planet Labs PBC, Jaap was instrumental in bringing the Land Surface Temperature Product to market and worked as a staff scientist, focusing on the scientific foundations of Planet’s innovative Planetary Variable products.
Currently Jaap is a Sr. Specialist hydrology and earth observation at Deltares.
