Space security sits at the intersection of civil protection and cyber defence: the same assets that deliver navigation, weather, Earth observation and communications services for civil security must withstand physical hazards and very determined digital adversaries. This talk connects those domains through a resilience-by-design lens, based on lessons from real-world security operations and research.
We show how space data and robust ground segments support crisis response while hardening essential services. For cyber defence, we share concepts and lessons learned from building and operating space security operations centres (SOCs), building cyber-range environments that emulate space systems end-to-end, and delivering cyber training that rapidly uplifts mission operators and engineers - including work on quantum-safe links and infrastructures.
Framed by the proposed EU Space Act’s push for harmonised safety, resilience and cybersecurity requirements across the Union, we will explain our approach to translate policies and best practices into actionable architectures and implementation wishlist. Attendees will leave with a unified view of civil and cyber space security landscape and some practical steps to help to protect Europe’s citizens and its vital space infrastructure.
